Daisy becomes youngest referee in Somerset

4:25 PM, Thursday, 11 March 10.

Daisy Goldsmith who turned 14 years old on the 10th March 2010 become the youngest referee out of 730 registered referees in Somerset and would also make her the youngest in the country.

Daisy whose uncle was a referee was really keen to follow in his footsteps and contacted us here at Somerset FA to see when she could start training. Keith Buller (Referees Development Officer) allowed Daisy to start her training prior to her 14th birthday on the understanding that she wouldn’t be allowed to referee until her birthday.

Daisy said ‘I got into football when I was ten and moved from an all-girls school to a primary school. Then I decided to take up refereeing because I thought it would develop my all-round understanding of the game and make me a better player. My friends are fine with it because they know I am sporty. In fact some are proud of me’

Another young female referee is Sarah Brown also attended the course and passed the exam on her 14th birthday. This made Sarah, Somerset's youngest referee up to this point. Both girls play for Bishops Lydeard in the girls county league.

Somerset has seen an increase of females interested in becoming referees and with the new introduction of the female referee pathway where females can progress all the way the FIFA list by doing female football only.
