Who’s behind Team Nineteen Leagues?
The Team Nineteen programme aims to address the 16-19 participation drop-off through a national network of FE Colleges driving the creation of intra-college Team Nineteen football leagues which are led by students for students.
What is a Student Management Team?
A student Management Team (SMT) is a body of students who regularly meet to create and develop Team Nineteen recreational leagues and college sport. The Student Management Team concept aims to empower student leaders to make a difference by creating more sporting opportunities for their peers and in doing so also develop themselves.
Whilst the group of enthusiastic student leaders are supported by a member of College staff, it is the SMT members who take full ownership of the Team Nineteen programme. Roles include chairing SMT meetings, recruiting players, organising fixtures, managing results and league tables, refereeing fixtures and for some even playing in the Team Nineteen leagues; ensuring provision is truly student centred.
What are the benefits of Student Led Team Nineteen leagues?
Student Management Teams are a fundamental part of the Team Nineteen programme. By empowering students to take the lead Team Nineteen leagues are developed in direct consultation with students, providing students with a voice and in turn helping shape sport provision that meets college and student needs.
By extending the college workforce through the creation of an SMT student leaders can help support staff in areas of limited capacity, their involvement in delivery helps create a positive playing environment for their peers and their role in promoting playing opportunities to friends has proven a powerful recruitment tool.
Furthermore, by taking ownership of the College recreational football provision, SMT members gain authentic project management experience and develop a range of key skills and behaviours to support them into higher education and/or employment.
How can I set up a Student Management Team?
Many College SMTs are recruited through a simple written application and sometimes interview.
