Referees Development Event

Somerset Referees from all around the County attended a referee development event at Strode College, Street.

The morning consisted of practical workshops delivered by senior  referees and tutors, Megan Buller, Dave Brammer, Sav Yianni, Craig Scriven , Lucy Oliver, Wendy Townsend, Jason Haywood and Jane Simms. The four workshops were based on assistant refereeing, managing attacking free kicks, positioning in open play and managing difficult players. The afternoon session was a competitive, fun,  interactive laws of the game session lead by Jo Stimpson which was followed by a Q & A session.

“Thank you very much for organising today’s referee development training sessions.

All the sessions were really useful to me, especially the session on managing difficult players. This training will be really useful to me when I start to officiate in ‘open-age’ matches, after 1st December when I turn 16!

Not only were all the sessions informative, they were also lots of fun, which always makes for a great learning experience!

I now have to put all this new knowledge in to my game...”

“I found all the practical and workshop not only advantageous to my game but fun.
The team which had been selected for today were exceptionally informative and their love of
refereeing infectious”

“Meeting Lucy and Jane has also inspired me personally to train harder and take it to the next level”

Referee Development Officer Jo Stimpson said: “The day was a massive success. It was great to see so many of our experienced referees as well as our young new referees keen to learn and develop their game. We shall certainly be repeating this event in the future”
